The Pan American Benoit #1 discovered the Thornwell field in Jefferson Davis Parish, Louisiana in May of 1956. The majority of development took place between the discovery date and 1966 with sporadic development continuing into the early 80's. In June 1997, Manti purchased a promoted 33.333% working interest and 125 square miles of 3D seismic in the Thornwell/Lakeside Program with Shell and Enron (Shells interest subsequently acquired by Meridian Resources).

All wells drilled, with the exception of the Pettijean 1, targeted the Marg-Idio sand. In November 1998, the M.A. Guidry 21 No. 1 exploration well was completed between 11,560 and 11,690 feet and tested at a rate of 18 MMcfd and 472 BCPD with FTP at 6290 psi on a 24/64" choke. In November 1999, the Potter 33-2 well was drilled to 11,872' and completed and tested from perforations between 11,756 and 11,772, 18.3 Mcfd and 540 BCPD with FTP of 7042 psi on a 20/64" choke. In December 1999, the Potter 33-1 was completed and tested with perforated between 11,658 and 11,728 feet, The Pettijean 1 was a deep test and was dually completed in the Marg-Idio and Marg-Howie. In December 1999, the Marg-Idio tested at 7.1 MMcfd and 216 BCPD with an FTP of 3821# on a 15/64" choke and the Marg-Howei zone tested at 7.2 MMcfd, 1050 BCPD with FTP of 5065# on a 16/64" choke. The Idio locations were considered PUDs based on the clearly defined 3D anomalies validated by drilling success.

Since drilling began in late 1998, 13 successful wells were drilled with an additional 19 exploration prospects generated from the 3D surveys. Reserves ranged from 1.3 BCF to 80 BCF with estimated gross reserves for these projects at 326 BCFG. Manti controls 14,700 gross acres (5100 net acres) covering the prospects. Thornwell was sold to Denbury Resources in October 2000 (or was it January 2001).
